• Description
What is the immediate issue or problem?

Radio is one of the most persistent communication platforms in poorer rural communities. However, most local radio stations do not broadcast information for the community and generally focus on higher income communities. There is an opportunity to create smaller local radio stations, with broadcast areas of a kilometer or less, to focus on delivering critical messages, training, and even localised content to the community.

If we could get small radio stations operational, it would not only give us a wide broadcast channel for emergencies, but it would also give us a great platform to deploy educational content for the local community.

We need a low-cost and low maintenance way to deploy a self-powered community radio station into a community. The solution needs to be robust and stable, and very simple to operate.

How long have we got to solve it?

This is an ongoing problem, so we have time to solve this.

What issues stand in the way of solving this problem?

Cost, portability, and the solution for a power source.

What kind of assets do you think we could use to solve the problem?

We are aware of solutions that involve single-board computers, but we don’t have the technical skill or time to investigate these solutions.

What has been tried and hasn’t worked or hasn’t completely solved the problem?

We haven’t really tried anything at this point, as we don’t have the technical skills.
